Visual Arts at Tapestry Teacher: Nikki Catalano Click here to visit the "Abstract Birds" exhibit Art Update Since January students in grade K/1 studied the visual images and techniques of the storywriter and artist, Eric Carle. Each student created works of art through the means of tearing, ripping, and overlapping paper surfaces. Students used construction paper, tissue paper, and cardboard then painted with watercolor and tempera to re-create story characters. Students in K/1 then created a Very Lonely Firefly installation with six panels (pom poms and paint). Each of these panels was then lit-up with Christmas lights and hung upstairs in the K/1 hallway. Click the small image on the right to see a larger version of the image. Students in K/1 are now in the process of creating paper mache Lonely Fireflies. Each firefly will then be painted and hung in the hallway. 2/3 Students Students in 2/3 created their own cartoon characters after learning about different ways in which cartoonists create motion in comic strips. Each student was to create a story about a day at Tapestry Charter School with his/her character. 2/3s are now learning about Ancient Greece and Art History through slides and other visual images in art. Students will study art, theater, and clothing styles of Ancient Greece. Students will re-create these styles and techniques of art through primitive methods used during ancient times. 4th Grade Students Grade 4 worked on creating abstract birds with mixed media and cray-pas (learned in previous studies of birds and their habitats in their curriculum). Visit the exhibit. Students then worked together to create a collaborative wall installation that they named the Fourth Grade Funkification Installation. This wall installation is composed of found objects and paint. All students enjoyed working together and exploring each others creative side. So, check out this funky installation in the basement by the Art Studio. 5/6 worked on creating color with paint through the Mimetic theory. Each student chose one work of art from a famous masterwork. Please keep a look out for the finished products. Also, students in 4-6 are working on 2004 Earth Day T-Shirt Contest. Students are to create images on how to reduce, reuse, and recycle on our planet. In this contest, everyone is a winner. All participating schools will receive environmental education materials for their library. Plus, all students who submit artwork will receive a certificate of appreciation. |
