BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Amy H. Friedman is a founder of Tapestry Charter School and the mother of three children, one of whom attends the school. She is a recipient of the “Pathfinder Award” given by representatives of the Buffalo Business Community for her work in public education. She was appointed by the Mayor to the City of Buffalo Charter Revision Commission that was charged with revising the City of Buffalo’s governing charter where she served as the Chairperson of the Task Forces on Budget and on Education. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Allegheny College and has served in leadership positions on the City Honors School Foundation, The Buffalo Seminary Parents Association, the Olmsted Home School Association and the Junior Group of the Albright Knox Art Gallery.

Cynthia A. Walawander, M.A., Executive Vice President - Ms. Walawander received her B.A. in statistics in 1986 and an M.A. in statistics in 1988 from the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership program in 1999. Ms. Walawander has over ten years of experience in the strategic planning and implementation of new business initiatives and project management of large scale, multi-institutional medical marketing programs. She leads the information architecture group at Cognigen Corporation whose mission is to provide analytical communication solutions to clients through the use of web-based technologies.

Bobbie Dukarm is a physician who specializes in the medical treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia and is the Founder and Director of the Center for Eating Disorders at Sister’s Hospital. She graduated from Denison University and University of Buffalo School of Medicine and then completed a Pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Adolescent Medicine fellowship at University of Rochester. While on the faculty at University of Rochester, she founded Camp Connect, the first residential camp in the United States for teenagers with eating disorders.

Prior to medical school, Bobbie was a teacher in New York City at a school with a similar educational philosophy to Tapestry’s. She is currently involved in the Playground Project at the Jewish Community Center.

Her husband, Rob Dukarm, also works at Sister’s Hospital as a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill newborns. They have two boys, their oldest is in first grade at Tapestry and their youngest will start Kindergarten at Tapestry next fall. Bobbie is a parent representative to the Board of Trustees.

Nancy Wallace is a professor of education at Canisius College. She received a B.A degree in education from Cortland College, a M.A. in bilingual education and a Ph.D. in early childhood education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, Central America, working to improve the education and health care for people living in remote villages. She has several years of varied teaching experiences and was an assistant professor at New Mexico Highlands University before returning to Buffalo in 1999.

Current teaching and research interests include preparing teacher candidates to work effectively in urban settings with diverse learners; and partnership relations with urban schools.

Nancy and her husband, Kevin, live in the city of Buffalo, enjoy renovating old homes, and have three children.

Marc Shatkin graduatd with a J.D. from SUNY at Buffalo in 1994 and also has an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 and a B.S. from the University of Vermont in 1986. He has been in the the private practice of law since 1994 with a general practice in Buffalo which recently merged into a new firm, Muscato, Bogulski & Shatkin. He is a member of the Erie County Bar Association 1995-present and also sits on the Unlawful Practice of Law Committee, 1996-present.

He is a father of two Tapestry children - Leah in the 3rd grade and Aaron in kindergarten.

Thomas M. Burns, CPA, CMA is currently a manager at Lumsden & McCormick, LLP,  Certified Public Accountants.  Tom joined Lumsden & McCormick in 1999 after working for several years as an accountant for a large international corporation.  Tom has extensive experience auditing various nonprofit organizations and specializes in charter schools.  He also has experience providing auditing and accounting services to commercial entities, governments and employee benefit plans.

Tom is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and National Tooling and Machining Association.  He is chairman of the NYSSCPA Committee in Cooperation with the Erie County Bar Association and has served as Treasurer of the Buffalo Chapter of the IMA.  Tom earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo with an accounting major.

Tom is married and the father of two children. 

C. Teo Balbach (pending) is a Tapestry parent and a Principal at Mercury Capital Partners, a media and communications finance group. Teo has spent his professional career working in the software, technology and finance fields. Teo received his BA in economics from Harvard University (Magna Cum Laude) in 1991 and his MBA from the Tuck School at Dartmouth in 1997. (SUNY board approval pending)
