Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are pleased to announce our next parent workshop, on May 20, 2013 from 6:30-8:00 pm, to be held in our lower school cafeteria, directly after the TCA meeting.  In 2011 New York State adopted the Common Core Learning Standards to make sure all children succeed once they graduate from high school.  The objective for our parent workshop will be to share how the Common Core Learning Standards are different from the traditional New York educational standards, how the Common Core Learning Standards support the instructional model here at Tapestry, and to share with parents a variety of ways they can support their children at home.    

Mr. Andrew Hossack, our 5thand 6thgrade ELA teacher, and Mrs. Cheryl Dobbertin, Director of Common Core Curriculum for Expeditionary Learning, will be present to share their expertise about the Common Core English Language Arts standards.  Mr. Hossack and Mrs. Dobbertin have been part of a national team writing the exemplar curriculum modules for the New York State Education Department.  It is an honor that one of our own teachers has been part of the project to create curriculum that has been adopted by local school districts such as Lancaster and Orchard Park. 

Also present will be Jennifer Goldin, our 7thand 8thgrade math teacher.  Ms. Goldin spent this last summer studying the Common Core Math curriculum extensively with Expeditionary Learning and our local BOCES to prepare in-depth curriculum maps for grades K-8 aligned to the ‘instructional shifts’ required by the new standards.  Ms. Goldin was also featured in the February 2012 issue of Educational Leadership for her progressive methods of mathematics instruction.    

The workshop will begin promptly at 6:30 in the K-8 cafeteria.  This will not be an open house format.

There are a variety of resources for parents that detail the importance of developing critical thinking skills, authentic problem-solving, and using evidence to support thinking.

If you would like to attend this workshop, please RSVP to Pat Dmoch no later than May 15, 2013.  We need to know an approximate number of parents attending, so we may appropriately plan for staffing, supplies, and materials.

Applebee's Breakfast Fundraiser.

Fun event at Applebee's restaurant at 2656 Delaware Avenue in North Buffalo. This fundraiser will contribute to athletics and fieldwork for both the high school and middle school programs. Tickets are $6 each and available in advance in the school's main offices. Please join us as our student, family, and faculty volunteers serve your breakfast table!
