Physical Education
Physical Education is an integral part of the total education program. It contributes to the development of the student through the natural medium of physical activity and human movement. It must be a carefully planned sequence of learning experiences designed to fulfill the growth, development and behavior needs of each student. The Physical Education experience should be a positive motivating force that will lead students to live a healthy lifestyle. Students should be provided experiences that address the psychomotor, cognitive and affective domains of learning. There experiences should be developed utilizing a multidisciplinary approach that incorporates thematic units aligned with the New York State learning standards for all areas of education. A physical education curriculum needs to be well rounded with a wide variety of activities to meet the student’s needs. The more activities students are exposed to and experience, the greater chance he or she will discover activities of high interest. Co curricular activates need to be provided whether its intramurals or interscholastic athletics. Students need healthy outlets to participate in their free time. Learning must be beyond the immediate moment and offer each student skills and concepts for a lifetime of use. As a physical educator it is important to continually seek to update methods, curriculum, activities, and teaching styles in accordance with the students’ developmental needs. Students deserve a physical education teacher who loves to create the best learning environments and who thrives on the student’s expressions of joy, wonderment, and appreciation. |
